Spiny Elm Caterpillar
(Nymphalis antiopa)
Spring Lake, Alberta
* A caterpillar having breakfast :)
(This is a stinging caterpillar. Though most stinging caterpillars become moths, this prickly larva will one day be a beautiful mourning cloak butterfly. Contact with the poisonous hairs or spines of the Spiny Elm caterpillar can cause skin rashes or even a hypersensitivity reaction in some cases.)

on May 12, 2011I looked it up. Looks like a Spiny Elm. If it is, it has a nasty sting. It is one of the few stinging caterpillars that becomes a butterfly rather than a moth. This is shot is much sharper and more colorful than any of the others I am finding on line.

on May 12, 2011Do you know what kind of caterpillar he is? He looks like he could be painful to touch.
