April 4, 2011 Female Hairy Woodpecker Elk Island Retreat Near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta * It was nice to see this big bird at the site last week. We normally get a lot of Downy Woodpeckers, but rarely see the Hairy ones. I find it really hard to tell the difference between the two, especially if they are not in at the same time. I am so excited for spring and all the birds it will bring :) (Sorry I was away from the computer the last couple days - I have posted a few photos to get caught up)
